The history of the establishment of the Italian language department dates back to the academic year 1993 and continued until 2002. batches of students graduated, and they are the nucleus on which the department relies now from among the faculty members.
Then it was re-activated in 2013, according to the cultural exchange agreement between the University of Tripoli and the Italian University of Pavia, with the support and encouragement of the Italian Cultural Center in Tripoli.
The department opened in March 2013 with the admission of thirty students and one faculty member, Dr. Roberto Vetrono, visiting professor from the Italian University of Pavia, and under the supervision of Dr. Antonio Moreni, Dr. Barbara Aero, Dr. Khaled El Gomaty, and Dr. Hoda Tamer.
Today, the department includes about 150 students and nine Libyan faculty members. Professor Marco Bernioni, Professor Ida Gallo from Italy and some collaborators also participated in the teaching.
The Italian Cultural Center and the Italian Foreign Ministry provided the department with a set of books and dictionaries, and provided annual scholarships to distinguished students. Five of the department's students received scholarships to complete their studies in Italy at the Italian University of Perugia, in addition to 15 short scholarships for a period of three months at the University of Siena, Italy.

This Italian BA provides a stimulating program of Italian language and linguistics, literature, art, history and film. Students can take Italian from beginner's level or advanced (post A level or equivalent).
